Mike Lee married James’s mother, Sharon Burr, in 1993. At the moment, Mike and his wife live in Alpine, Utah. 

Mike is the son of Rex E. Lee and Janet (née Griffin). His father was President Ronald Reagan’s Solicitor General and the founding dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School.

Additionally, Rex Lee was the president of Brigham Young University. 

Mike is a second cousin to former Republican Senator Gordon H. Smith of Oregon, former Democratic U.S. Senator Mark Udall of Colorado, and Tom Udall of New Mexico. 

In 1989, Mike graduated from Timpview High School and attended Brigham Young University.
