James Taylor suffered from mental illness when he was a teenager.
Taylor, while being a talented student, suffered from depression, which was aggravated by familial strife and instability.
Taylor dropped out of his final year of high school and instead checked himself into McLean, a renowned psychological institution in Massachusetts. He stayed at the facility until the end of 1965 and the beginning of 1966.
When he checked himself out after nine months he moved to New York’s East Village to start his musical career.
